Tension gripped Bayelsa State at the weekend following threats by a host community, Ikebiri, to disrupt work at the state government’s International Cargo Airport project site over unpaid compensation.
The airport project is located near Amassoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered over the weekend that the people of Ikebiri were angry that the state government had been paying lip-service to off-setting an outstanding N210 million compensation.
A frontline opinion leader in the community, who did not want to be named, said the government had also reneged on its promise to constantly supply water to the community as their river had been polluted by massive dredging of sand for the project.
He said the community was lacking clean drinking water, stressing that the only borehole facility in the community had since packed up due to poor maintenance by government.Go back to news home
